Happy holidays! …Wait, did I really just type that? Scary but true, it’s hard to believe the holidays really are right around the corner. This time of year presents a unique and frustrating conundrum: We have the desire to participate in all the festive activities presented to us, but often the stress that comes along with the season gets the better of us. The truth is, what is meant to be a happy and joyous time of year often leaves one feeling quite the opposite: drained, bloated and exhausted. Where’s the joy in that?

But it doesn’t have to be this way. Instead of allowing yourself to fall prey to holiday stress and everything that goes along with it (think compromised immunity and exhaustion), there are simple steps you can take to ensure you have a happy and mindful holiday season while maintaining optimal wellbeing. The key ingredient? Functional mushrooms (big surprise, right?).

Functional mushrooms work with your body to help maintain optimal wellbeing. In other words, they’re powerful adaptogens that can assist your system in defending against occasional stress and the issues that come with it. Use the tips below to guide you through the holiday season and beyond:

Get plenty of rest

The holidays can demand a lot from us, ensuring restful, restoring sleep sets us up to feel contented and calm in all other areas of life (especially when you’re the one hosting this year’s big feast). The thing is though, many of us have the desire to get more sleep, but few are actually willing to put in the work to achieve it. Think about it, when was the last time you actually went to bed early?

That’s what I thought!

More sleep can support the reduction of occasional stress, help us feel more energized and support the immune system in maintaining optimal function.

Try sipping a warm mug of Reishi Elixir or stirring a spoonful of Reishi Spores into your tea before bed, both blends support occasional stress and a restful night’s sleep.

Support digestion

With parties, feasts, happy hours, and potlucks filling our calendars this time of year, our digestion can start to feel a bit… lackluster. Filling up on foods we wouldn’t normally eat (like that extra slice of pumpkin pie) can knock the gut out of balance and lead to lots of unpleasant and uncomfortable side effects that I won’t mention here…

But I think you know what I mean.

Sipping something bitter before you eat, like our 10 Mushroom Blend, could help curb overeating (a huge culprit in poor digestion). Bitter foods have also been shown to support digestion by aiding in the production of bile, meaning that along with supporting immune functions, this blend of super ‘shrooms can help keep your stomach happy, too.

Chaga also supports digestion, making our Chaga Elixir ideal to keep with you when visiting family and friends or attending holiday parties. Just mix it with water and enjoy before or after you eat.

Reduce occasional stress

If there’s one thing I think we can all agree on, it’s this:

Stress happens. To all of us. Even if we don’t realize it.

Like getting plenty of sleep, reducing overall stress can make a huge impact on our wellbeing and may allow you to actually enjoy the hustle of the holidays – instead of dreading it!

Our brand new Adaptogen Blend could help support occasional stress. And bonus! Like the 10 Mushroom Blend, this blend is also slightly bitter, and may work similarly to support digestion. Stir it into tropical smoothies, coffee or tea and sit back and relax.

Support immune function

Loss of sleep… poor digestion… increased stress…. What do the three symptoms above have in common? Together (and solo), they could contribute to compromised immunity.

Unfortunately, this is the time of year when many of us come down with the office bug or are exposed to all kinds of germs when we travel from coast to coast.

Keep a few packets of Chaga Elixir, which is rich in antioxidant properties, in your pocket to stir into coffee or tea while you’re out and about, or start your day with a serving from the Chaga Elixir 30 Serving Tin to ward off sniffles and sneezes and support immune function from Thanksgiving to New Year’s.

Stay hydrated

Your mom was right. Sipping a glass of water - or better yet, a glass of water with our 5 Mushroom Blend dissolved in it - really could make you feel calmer. When our bodies are dehydrated, they work harder to function which could cause inadvertent stress by the release of cortisol.

** Fetches a glass of water… **

Likewise, simply being stressed could cause you to become dehydrated if you’re not already regularly drinking water. To avoid this vicious cycle, sip water throughout the day, with a big glass when you wake in the morning and before you turn in at night.

If you need a little flavor, try dissolving a packet of one of our Mushroom Elixirs in a tall glass of filtered water.

Get outside

Cold winter days may make you want to stay in and get cozy, but it could be exactly the opposite that helps break you out of your funk. Studies have shown that there’s a connection between the great outdoors and the reduction of occasional stress.

Try taking a walk with family or friends before or after your big holiday feast to breathe in the fresh outdoor air and feast your eyes on the natural world. Be sure to bring a mug of Mushroom Hot Cacao to enjoy while you stroll or make a big pot-full to enjoy once you return to the cozy warmth of your home!

The key takeaway here? Just as our selection of functional mushroom Coffees, Elixirs, Hot Cacaos and Blends work in tandem for optimal wellness, each one of these tips supports the one before it. Put it all together and you’ve got yourself a happy, chill holiday season - It’s like the world’s easiest jigsaw puzzle!
