If you’re a person who watches television (so... almost all of us), chances are you’ve probably viewed more than a few ads for products promising beautiful skin.

All we have to do is shell out some $$$ and slather the stuff on our faces. Couldn’t be easier.

…There’s just one tiny problem: Many of those promises sound too good to be true for a reason.

The majority of skin care products are made of cheap materials and have a huge markup, which is how they’re able to constantly create expensive TV ads featuring A-list celebrities. These chemical-laden products typically only go skin deep, made to work on a surface level (if they work at all, most are filled with sodium lauryl sulfate – a chemical that could be toxic – and isopropyl alcohol) – but that’s the end of the line.

In reality, there’s a host of factors that impact the wellbeing of our skin on a cellular level, eventually reflected on the surface – stress, activity level, quality of sleep, even the kind of water we’re drinking (and whether we’re drinking enough water)...

And of course, what we eat.

Today I’m going to discuss something entirely different from ‘shrooms, but potentially just as beneficial as a natural beauty solution… Turmeric.

Used for centuries in Ayurveda, one of the oldest systems of medicine out there, turmeric happens to be one of the most-used spices in India, a country with some of the lowest rates of gastrointestinal disease in the world. And as we know from this article, a well-cared-for gut could equal beautiful skin.

What are the benefits of turmeric?

  • Curcumin, a bioactive compound found in turmeric, could support the production of collagen. More collagen could support more resilient, youthful-looking skin.
  • Piperine, found in black pepper, could make curcumin more bioavailable, supporting its ability to produce collagen (why we always see black pepper + turmeric).
  • The curcumin in turmeric could support the activity of antioxidants already present in the body – supporting skin renewal and wound healing.

Says one study:

Curcumin increased cellular proliferation and collagen synthesis at the wound site… Curcumin treated wounds were found to heal much faster as indicated by improved rates of epithelialization...”

Translation: wounds that heal faster could equal more resilient, glowing skin.

Turmeric is even used as part of a wedding tradition in India called Haldi (haldi = another name for turmeric), in which the future bride and groom are covered head toe in turmeric paste to cleanse and beautify before the ceremony. It’s said that any unmarried friends or family members that get touched by the paste are destined to find a good-looking partner – a win-win!

Haldi may not be as common here in the Western world, but more and more people are catching on to the benefits of turmeric, especially when it comes to supporting the skin.

Why is supporting the skin so important?

  • Perhaps because we see it everyday, we have a tendency to forget that our skin is our largest organ and requires just as much love as others, like the liver and heart.
  • Our skin protects us from all kinds of stressors, both environmental and physical, and plays a key role in warding off infection.
  • It acts as a filter against the world. When our filter isn’t working properly, the entire system could be compromised, including immune function.

When the skin is supported by ingredients like functional ‘shrooms, adaptogens, and super spices like turmeric, we’re helping it work at an optimal level (who wouldn’t want that?).

Of course, there are plenty of easy ways to support skin with the benefits of turmeric that have nothing to do with weddings or covering yourself head to toe with it.

Make using turmeric a daily habit by mixing up a Golden Latte. Or, take inspiration from the haldi tradition and create your own turmeric face mask by mixing turmeric powder with water or plain yogurt and applying it to clean, dry skin.

Just be careful of your white tee shirts – everything turmeric touches truly turns to gold!
