There is always a latest and greatest fad when it comes to promoting a healthy lifestyle — a new way of eating that will transform your body and well-being. Maybe you’ve experienced this yourself, dropping tons of dough on products that don’t actually bring noticeable results?
Perhaps your cupboard is chock-full of capsules and powder that don’t live up to their marketing hype. The founders of Four Sigmatic certainly experienced this themselves, and it was this frustration and lack of truly educated information that led us to build this company.
Four Sigmatic was founded with the goal of cutting through all of the hype and helping people eat more of one of the world’s most scientifically studied superfoods, like mushrooms. We wanted to make these incredibly powerful foods taste better and be easier to use, so that they can be simply incorporated to upgrade your existing habits. In other words, no more fads, no more pills, and no more capsules.
Our first mission in accomplishing this was to popularize drinking (yes, drinking) mushrooms.
When we founded Four Sigmatic, our first goal was to find something small that people could add to their current diet to produce a positive impact on their health. For us, the answer was obvious: functional mushrooms.LEARN MORE
We know, we know. Mushrooms aren’t the first thing most people think about when it comes to implementing a healthy lifestyle. And they’re definitely not as sexy as many of the superfood fads out there today. Most people connect the word "mushroom" with either psychedelics or common culinary mushrooms like Portobello.
Here’s something we bet you didn’t know about mushrooms: they are among the world’s most studied superfoods.
Because mushrooms are so beneficial, thousands of studies have been conducted and papers have been written testifying to their incredible properties—to date, 1,100 papers have been published on just one single type of mushroom, of which there are more than 10,000 known varieties in North America alone.
Interestingly, most people don’t consume these functional types of mushrooms, so adding even small amounts can have benefits. During the last couple of generations, mushrooms have suffered from severe food racism, despite the fact that they are suitable to almost any diet, from Paleo to vegan. Enough of the hating ... start ‘shrooming!
It’s time to go back to our roots. Indigenous cultures have been incorporating mushrooms into their diets in both solid and liquid form for thousands of years; it’s part of ancient wisdom in cultures across the world. Yup, mushrooms are an original superfood.
Our name is a super geeky way of saying that our company represents only the fifty most researched foods. In science—and especially in the natural sciences—a large enough sample size will usually form a natural distribution. So, if, for example, you compare the nutrient density of all foods, you will see a bell curve form. If you take four standard deviation from the mean, you will have the four sigma foods.
That’s us! The Four Sigmatic core team has known each other for years. Most of our team members were actually roommates in college. We left our well-paid corporate jobs with the likes of Google, Citibank, and Hewlett-Packard to work on behalf of the great mushroom.
Our Mushroom Mission began in the Nordic countries in 2012 and, with the help of our innovative products, we have expanded to more than twenty-five countries in less than four years. In 2014, we relocated our business headquarters to the U.S. Our products launched in the U.S. in January 2015, and it has been quite a journey since then. We’re still a small employee-owned startup … but good things come in small packages, and we truly believe our passion and hard work will help us continue to make a real difference in global health.
We believe that our products can and will make a significant social impact simply based on their day-to-day benefits. But we also want to give back in another way: Whenever you buy any of our mushroom boxes, we will put a portion of the proceeds towards donating product to Boarding for Breast Cancer (B4BC), a 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation. B4BC advocates for a healthy, active, and sustainable lifestyle. One of their key focuses is empowering young people to make positive choices that promote lifelong wellness through outreach, sustainability, and support programs. With similar goals to promote lifelong wellness and healthy lifestyles, B4BC was the perfect organization to partner with.
Through two decades, Boarding 4 Breast Cancer (B4BC) has been educating people, raising funds, and giving back to local communities and research-based organizations. They organise rad events and do their best to help raise awareness, which is why we wanted to work with them. Plus they are super nice people. Visit their site to learn more about their work and how to get engaged.
